Seven billion people face a single challenge:
climate change
In Doha, Qatar today, 17,000 delegates from 194 nations began the United Nation's 18th annual conference (COP18) on climate change. Side events include a Sustainability Expo showcasing cutting-edge green technology, and unique Arab perspectives on climate change. A word Arabs use is hikma (wisdom).
Conference president Abdullah Bin Hamad Al-Attiyah sees the gathering as a turning point in climate-change negotiations, for the delegates must agree the second commitment period of the Kyoto Protocol. The first expires at year-end.
"The issues at the heart of these negotiations are at the forefront of global debate and discourse," Mr Al-Attiyah said. "All seven billion people living on the planet share a single challenge: climate change,"
"If we do not make the changes
we need to now, it will soon be too late."
"This is our mission. If we do not make the changes we need to now, it will soon be too late. We must decide whether we let our lifestyles jeopardise our life."
Indeed! People looking at the poor outcomes of previous COP conferences know we cannot leave, any longer, the necessary changes to governments alone. We need to keep constant pressure on our elected representatives to provide and enforce the ground-rules enabling rapid transition to ecologically sustainable lifestyles. If governments refuse or dally, electorates must, in self- interest, throw them out of office. There are no jobs or profit on a dead planet.
Institutions, businesses, and individuals, alike, need a change of heart to create a totally different world: fairer, more egalitarian, making far fewer babies - and the better-off everywhere consuming far less stuff and fossil-fuel transport.
Finding real happiness - and seeking harmony among us all and with the biosphere - has to do with the soul. Clearly, it is time for hikma.
"Be the change you wish to see in the world."
- Mahatma Gandhi
